Abstrak
Introduction: Superficial wound as a skin issue is commonly considered a trivial problem with minimal attention given, mainly for not being life threatening. However, when not given optimal care, superficial wound and mental health can create a vicious circle that may threaten physical and mental health. Therefore, skin regeneration and repair in order to optimize recuperation is a necessary topic to explore.
Discussion: Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) has been considered one of the most effective ways in superficial wound treatment. Nevertheless, many practitioners are still unaware of its proper use that can potentially cause harm to patients. This review article outlines similarities between LLLT treatment and natural epidermal repair, LLLT mechanisms of action, and safe types and doses of LLLT used according to each type. Search is based on the latest literature studies that have been published previously.
Conclusion: LLLT is defined as an effective treatment due to its provision of local effect with no damage to other organs. This effectiveness is mainly due to its properties, namely monochromaticity, coherence, and polarization which will stimulate stem cell tissue proliferation. In addition, LLLT effectiveness depends on both laser factors and tissue properties which application of small doses on a regular basis will result to a more optimal treatment than infrequent use in larger doses. Safe and widely used LLLT types are Er:YAG, 46-Diode Cluster Probe, HeNe, and GaAIAs.
